Today is the 20th anniversary of the signing of the American
Disabilities Act. There was so much going and so much to say that I
will hope to do a fuller post later in this celebration week. For
tonight, I wanted to share this screenshot from the webcast of the
White House celebration. The webcast was made available on the White
House website, or via Facebook. The Facebook version had a discussion
bar on the side, but when I was there the folks watching via Facebook
were being pretty quiet, and the screen was so small I couldn’t read
the closed captioning, so I switched back to the main link and used
Twitter for the community chat. There were a number of points made
that I’d like to comment on later, but this was something that no one
commented on at the time and which is possibly one of the most special
moments of the event. The man in the black cap is using ASL to sign to
President Obama, “I love you.” A moment later, President Obama smiles hugely and returns
the sign. I don’t know if he knows what it means or not, but what a
special moment on a special day honoring American with Disabilities
and the Act that empowers them.
