Charity Navigator: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

“Charity Navigator, America’s premier independent charity evaluator,
works to advance a more efficient and responsive philanthropic
marketplace by evaluating the financial health of over 5,400 of
America’s largest charities.”

This is not new, not emerging tech, just very useful. Do you get phone
calls from telemarketers asking for you to donate to a worthy cause?
Even with the National Do Not Call Registry, I still get lots of these
calls. I firmly tell them I won’t donate without a chance to first
check out their stats, and can they mail me in print. Then I go check
the Charity Navigator, and see what percentage goes to administration,
where does their money go, who are they helping, what is their
reputation among similar organizations. I particularly like their
funding efficiency review, the percentage of donated funds that
actually go to the programs they support, the percentage used to raise
funds, and the public comments. The latter are especially interesting
in the case of poorly rated charities. Using Charity Navigator and the
BBB Wise Giving tools give me more confidence in my donations to
charities.
